The hip is a ball and socket joint that allows the upper leg to
move from front to back as well as side to side.
The "ball" part consists of the head of the femur (which
is the largest and heaviest bone in the body). The "socket"
is the acetabulum, a cavity in the pelvis that holds the femoral
head.
